I am originally from Polk City, Iowa and have a BFA in Photography and Mixed Media from Iowa State University. I am very interested in social commentary, particularly regarding American youth culture. My latest work deals with the relationship between technology and society. It intrigues me how our media devices have become a statement of fashion and self worth. I have also worked extensively in South Africa with Blessman Medical Ministries to document their medical outreaches in poor, rural schools. As my mixed media has progressed over the years, I have realized the power of symbolism. The Nike swoosh, the McDonald's M, 30 second advertising--we live in a culture immersed in cliché. In that same spirit, I have adapted certain symbols to represent areas of my personal life, hence the name “Kelsey Cliché!”. Cupcakes, toast, anchors, and iPod headphones are a recurring theme in my mixed media work. Much of the material I use is recycled or from found objects. In August of 2009, Stephanie Bracelin and I brought the first Swap-O-Rama-Rama (SORR) to Des Moines. SORR is a non-profit event that teaches others how to reuse and reconstruct clothing--rescuing it from the landfill, saving money, and promoting creativity. Sewing, embroidery, screen-printing, and appliqué were some of the many workshops visitors could participate in. The event was a huge success, and we are in the process of planning it again for 2010. Next summer I plan to return to South Africa to continue my documentation there. I would like to pursue my MFA in the fall of 2010. With my masters I’d like to teach at a university or open my own gallery and studio. |
